Home » Intensive Outpatient Program For Youth
Adolescence is a time of rapid change, emotionally, socially, and developmentally. For many teens, academic pressures, peer dynamics, family conflict, or emerging mental health concerns can begin to feel overwhelming. We understand how difficult this stage can be, not just for young people, but for the families supporting them. That’s why we offer a structured outpatient program that gives teens more support than weekly therapy alone, without the need for inpatient hospitalization.
Bleuler’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for youth is designed for adolescents who are experiencing emotional or behavioral struggles such as anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, trauma responses, or substance use. It’s also a meaningful option for teens who need additional structure to maintain stability while remaining engaged in school, family life, and their communities. Our goal is to provide developmentally attuned support that builds skills, fosters resilience, and restores emotional balance within an outpatient framework.
Our IOP offers flexible, outpatient behavioral health care designed specifically for adolescents. It provides more consistent support than once-a-week therapy, while allowing youth to remain fully involved in their home life and school routine. Teens attend structured sessions multiple times per week, where they participate in therapeutic groups, individual counseling, and family-focused sessions tailored to their specific needs.
Each teen begins with a confidential intake and comprehensive assessment led by a licensed clinician. We explore the young person’s emotional health, behavioral patterns, family dynamics, and any relevant history with therapy or academic challenges. Parents or guardians are included in this process to ensure we have a full picture of the teen’s experience and goals. From there, we build an individualized outpatient treatment plan that reflects the teen’s strengths, needs, and developmental stage.
Treatment may include weekly individual therapy to help the teen process emotions, learn coping skills, and explore identity and values in a safe, confidential setting. Group therapy is also central to the program. These peer-based sessions focus on topics such as emotional regulation, healthy communication, self-esteem, and managing stress related to school or relationships. Clinicians guide group discussions to encourage empathy, build interpersonal skills, and create a sense of community.
We believe that lasting progress happens when families are involved. That’s why our program includes family therapy sessions where caregivers and teens can work through communication challenges, resolve conflict, and strengthen support systems. We also offer psychoeducational groups that address topics such as anxiety management, boundary setting, decision-making, and understanding substance use. If medication support is needed, we coordinate referrals to trusted psychiatric providers as part of the outpatient care plan.
While most teens attend three to five times per week, scheduling is flexible and always aligned with their academic obligations. Our program is intentionally structured to work with, not against, the realities of daily life. Sessions are focused, age-appropriate, and led by clinicians who specialize in adolescent care. Every aspect of our youth IOP is rooted in developmentally informed, trauma-sensitive approaches that honor the challenges of this life stage.
Teens often struggle to express how they feel or make sense of the pressure they’re under. That’s why we create a therapeutic environment that emphasizes trust, emotional safety, and respect. Our goal isn’t just to reduce symptoms, it’s to help young people feel seen, supported, and capable of navigating their world with new skills and confidence.
If your teen needs more than weekly therapy but doesn’t require hospitalization, our outpatient IOP may provide the right level of structure and support to help them take the next steps forward. We’re here to help your family move toward healing, one step at a time.
Families turn to Bleuler’s Youth IOP because they want more than a place to drop off their child; they want a collaborative, therapeutic experience grounded in expertise, empathy, and outpatient care that fits real life. We’ve been providing community-based mental health services for over 75 years, and our program reflects decades of earned trust and commitment to high-quality, personalized support.
Our IOP is not a one-size-fits-all model. We recognize that emotional distress in adolescence rarely occurs in isolation; it is shaped by school pressures, friendships, social media, family dynamics, and identity development. That’s why we approach every teen with curiosity and compassion, working to understand how their environment and emotions intersect. We build treatment plans that reflect their reality and empower them to find strength within it.
Family engagement is not optional; it’s central. Caregivers are involved from day one through regular family therapy, collaborative planning, and progress check-ins. We support parents in learning how to respond more effectively to their child’s needs and in creating healthier family communication patterns. When the family grows together, change lasts longer.
Our licensed clinical team includes therapists, social workers, and addiction counselors who specialize in adolescent care. We use developmentally tailored, evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT skills training, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care. These methods are adapted to fit the real-world concerns teens face, from school anxiety and social withdrawal to non-suicidal self-injury and substance use.
For teens dealing with both mental health and substance use challenges, we offer integrated outpatient support. Our program includes addiction-focused therapy, relapse prevention, and peer support groups designed to address dual concerns without stigma. We also offer targeted support for issues that often go unspoken, such as identity-related distress, academic burnout, and social anxiety.
At its core, our IOP creates space for teens to feel respected and safe. We don’t approach them as a problem to fix. We listen, validate, and guide them through self-awareness, emotional regulation, and personal growth. That sense of trust allows healing to take root.
When you choose Bleuler’s IOP, you’re choosing a partner who honors your teen’s individuality, keeps your family involved, and stays focused on long-term stability. We also offer telehealth sessions where appropriate to support accessibility and continuity of care.
When your child is struggling, the uncertainty and emotional toll on the entire family can be immense. Whether you’re noticing mood shifts, outbursts, academic struggles, increased isolation, or signs of substance use or behavioral changes, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by what to do next. That’s why the first call to Bleuler is designed to be supportive, not stressful. Our intake process begins with a low-pressure, judgment-free phone consultation. You’ll speak with one of our trained intake coordinators who will listen with care, answer your questions, and explain how our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) may support your child and your family.
We understand that the needs of teens today are complex. Many families seek support not just for anxiety or depression, but for challenges related to trauma, identity, or compulsive behaviors. That’s why our IOP is equipped to address a wide range of concerns through integrated care. If your teen is dealing with compulsive behaviors such as risky gaming or betting, we can incorporate Gambling Treatment into their care plan. If there’s a concern about substance use, we offer Substance Use Counseling and, when appropriate, Medication-Assisted Substance Use Treatment to help stabilize behavior and reduce cravings in a safe, supportive way.
If the IOP seems like a good fit after the initial call, we move forward with a comprehensive intake evaluation. This includes conversations with both the teen and their caregiver(s), a full psychosocial and academic history, and an assessment of emotional functioning. Our licensed clinicians take time to understand your teen’s environment, social context, family dynamics, and previous treatment experiences. We also remain sensitive to your family’s cultural values, priorities, and expectations so that every piece of care is aligned with who you are, not just what symptoms appear on paper.
From there, we develop a personalized treatment plan that includes a weekly structure built around your teen’s real life. If they’re managing school responsibilities, extracurriculars, or a part-time job, we create a schedule that respects those commitments. Core services in our IOP may include individual therapy, Group Counseling for peer connection and social skills, family therapy to restore communication at home, and access to Psychiatric Services for medication evaluation and management if needed. If attending in person is challenging, we also provide secure Telehealth Therapy, ensuring consistent care from the comfort of home without compromising clinical quality.
As the program progresses, you’ll receive regular updates and touchpoints from your child’s clinician. We believe families deserve transparency and support throughout treatment, which is why we include options for caregiver coaching, clinician feedback, and school coordination (with your consent). Whether your teen is processing trauma, exploring identity, or navigating social stressors, we walk with them, and with you, every step of the way.
When your teen is ready to step down from the IOP, our team helps create a detailed aftercare plan designed for sustainable progress. This may include referrals for continued therapy, medication follow-ups through our Psychiatric Services, connection to local peer support networks, or scheduled Telehealth Therapy sessions to maintain momentum during key life transitions. Our work doesn’t end when the program ends; we remain part of your ongoing support network for as long as you need us.
At Bleuler, we believe healing isn’t just about helping one person; it’s about helping families move forward together. Whether your child is navigating substance use, behavioral challenges, trauma, or emotional distress, we’re here with care that’s comprehensive, culturally informed, and always grounded in the belief that change is possible.
You don’t have to wait for rock bottom to get help. The sooner you reach out, the sooner you can reclaim your life. Recovery is possible—and it starts with one step. Let’s take it together.
